Salvatore Castano: Uncorking the Mind of a Wine Virtuoso

Found in the heart of Fulham’s Parsons Green lies Friarwood Wines, a cellar brimming with treasures that wine enthusiasts dream of. It was here we met Salvatore Castano, a friend and celebrated sommelier who, in 2021, earned the title of European and African Sommelier of the Year. As we delved into his world, it became clear that Salvatore’s passion for wine is as vibrant and layered as the vintages he adores.

Fine Wines: A Question of Quality, Not Price
“Fine wines, for me, are not about the price; they’re about the quality,” Salvatore declares, gesturing towards a bottle of 1947 Haut-Brion. Despite its age and prestige, he reveals it’s “not that expensive” at around £2,000. This perspective underpins his philosophy: great wine isn’t about splashing cash but appreciating craftsmanship.

One memory that stands out for Salvatore is an incredible dinner where a guest brought a magnum of something extraordinary. “It was amazing,” he recalls, his eyes lighting up with the joy of the experience. For Salvatore, wine is about creating moments — not just drinking history, but sharing it.

Riesling: A Timeless Favourite
When asked about his favourite wine region, Salvatore’s answer comes quickly: Riesling. “It’s one of those white wines you can drink in 10, 20, even 30 years,” he explains. The ability of Riesling to age gracefully and evolve over time is what captivates him. With each passing year, the wine reveals new layers, becoming an ever-giving gift to those patient enough to wait.

Making Fine Wine Accessible
At Tiny Wine, our mission has always been to make exceptional wines accessible, and it’s a goal that resonates deeply with Salvatore. “What you’re doing with the little samples of top wines is incredible,” he says. “It’s an experience — something you might never try in your life again.” For a sommelier of his calibre to champion this approach is a testament to the value of bringing fine wine to a broader audience.

The Takeaway
Salvatore Castano’s journey through wine is one of discovery, sharing, and appreciation. From 1947 Bordeaux to timeless Rieslings, his passion is infectious. And with initiatives like Tiny Wine’s sample offerings, the world of fine wine becomes less of a lofty dream and more of a shared experience. As Salvatore puts it, it’s all about the joy of tasting something extraordinary — and creating memories that linger long after the last sip.
