Tasting Notes

The 2019 combines ripe red and black fruit with cedar, pepper, ginger, lavender and violet. It is full-bodied but not heavy, with velvety tannins and bright acidity carrying the wine towards a long, composed finish. Drawn from magnum, it retains impressive freshness alongside its developing complexity.

About Casa Ferreirinha

Established over 70 years ago under the visionary legacy of Dona Antónia Ferreira, this legendary estate single-handedly pioneered unfortified winemaking in Portugal’s rugged Douro Valley. Under the precise guidance of head winemaker Luís Sottomayor, Casa Ferreirinha crafts a diverse range of elegant, site-specific wines—from the crisp, high-altitude Planalto white to the opulent, deeply concentrated Quinta da Leda red. At the absolute pinnacle of their craft sits Barca Velha, an almost-mythical icon produced only in exceptional vintages that stands as the ultimate benchmark for Portuguese fine wine, radiating with monumental complexity, intense dark fruit, and an aristocratic, age-defying majesty.

About Douro Valley

The Douro is one of Portugal’s most historic wine regions, known for both its powerful fortified Port and a strong range of dry wines. Steep schist terraces along the river grow varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), which create structured dark fruited reds. In recent years, producers have put more focus on fresh, vibrant whites made from grapes like Arinto, Rabigato, Viosinho and Gouveio, often from higher altitude vineyards. Traditional methods remain central in Port production while dry wines benefit from modern cellar techniques. The Douro now offers a balanced mix of classic fortified styles and confident contemporary reds and whites.
