Tasting note
🦉 One of the Douro's early fine wine pillars. This shows lovely typicity by the way of dark damson fruit and herbal tones are carried by a muscular Douro structure. The magnum format brings added finesse. Concentrated, balanced and built for the long haul.

About the producer
Casa Ferreirinha is one of the Douro’s most storied producers, best known as the home of 'Barca Velha', on of the region’s original benchmarks for fine, ageworthy dry red wine. The estate traces its roots to the visionary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, whose legacy still guides the philosophy today.
Fruit comes from across the region, naturally leaning into the powerful Douro varieties. Winemaking is careful and unhurried, favouring balance over sheer weight.
Casa Ferreirinha’s wines carry a sense of poise and longevity, reflecting both the history of the house and the evolving potential of the Douro.
Portugal
Portugal’s wine story spans ancient Celtic and Roman origins, later shaped by medieval trade and the long partnership with Britain. The eighteenth century formalised the Douro as one of the world’s first demarcated regions. Today, Portugal champions traditional grapes, regional identity and a renewed commitment to quality.
The wine identity here is rooted in its proud regional diversity, Atlantic influence and a deep heritage of local grapes. Its classification system centres on Denominação de Origem Controlada (D.O.C.), which highlights origin across regions such as Douro, Vinho Verde, Dão, Alentejo, to name a few. Indigenous varieties drive the character of Portuguese wine, from Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) in the Douro to the bright, zesty styles of Alvarinho (Albariño) and Loureiro in the north. Arinto’s consistent freshness and ability to retain acidity make it a candidate for being the country’s most important white grape. You will also find textured whites from Encruzado and Ferñao Pires and richly fruited reds from top to bottom.
Portugal’s strength lies in its individuality, where climate, landscape, tradition and inherent vinous pride combine to create distinct and expressive wines.
Douro Valley
The Douro is one of Portugal’s most historic wine regions, known for both its powerful fortified Port and a strong range of dry wines. Steep schist terraces along the river grow varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), which create structured dark fruited reds.
In recent years, producers have put more focus on fresh, vibrant whites made from grapes like Arinto, Rabigato, Viosinho and Gouveio, often from higher altitude vineyards. Traditional methods remain central in Port production while dry wines benefit from modern cellar techniques.
The Douro now offers a balanced mix of classic fortified styles and confident contemporary reds and whites.
