Tasting note

🦉 It’s hard to argue with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc when it's made as well as Huia makes their wines. Archetypal gooseberry, citrus and fresh herbs ride a bright, zesty palate. Everything is lively, whilst texture stays rounded and gentle. A balanced, organic Marlborough style.

About the producer

Huia is a family-run, organic and biodynamic estate in Marlborough, founded by Claire and Mike Allan after winemaking stints around the world. Their philosophy centres on balance and gentle handling, with a strong focus on preserving brightness and texture in the fruit.

The range spans Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, sparkling wine and Pinot Noir, all showing a clean expression of Marlborough’s terroir.

Huia has built a loyal following for its authenticity and for wines that feel vibrant without being flashy.

New Zealand

New Zealand’s wine history is young, beginning with nineteenth-century missionaries and modest early plantings. A turning point came in the 1970s with the emergence of modern Sauvignon Blanc and cool-climate viticulture. Rapid growth followed, and the country now stands as a leader in fresh, focused, regionally expressive wines.

New Zealand has built a global reputation on purity, bright fruit and a strong connection to place. Its wine regions stretch from subtropical Northland to the cool reaches of Central Otago, with a focus on expressing climate and landscape. The appellation framework is relatively relaxed, allowing producers to focus on style and sustainability. Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough remains the country’s calling card, while Pinot Noir thrives in Martinborough and Central Otago.

You will also find excellent Chardonnay, Riesling and Syrah across both islands. New Zealand wine is defined by freshness, clarity and a modern approach that celebrates its unique environment.

Marlborough

Marlborough is New Zealand’s best-known wine region and the global benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc.

The cool climate, long sunshine hours and free-draining soils create intensely aromatic wines with signature Marlborough freshness. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay also perform well, offering clean, sometimes complex fruit fruit-driven styles with subtle structure. Many vineyards stretch across the Wairau and Awatere Valleys, each adding small differences in flavour and texture. Winemaking here is modern and precise, with a focus on capturing bright, clean fruit above all else. Marlborough remains a reliable source of vibrant, crisp wines that are instantly recognisable.
