Tasting note
🦉 Best Syrah from New Zealand? Blackberry, violet and pepper spice unfold across a deep, refined palate. Chalky tannins provide shape and a persistent frame. Concentrated, elegant and clearly stamped by the structure of Gimblett Gravels.

About the producer
Trinity Hill is a Hawke’s Bay staple, founded by John Hancock alongside the late Robert and Robyn Wilson, with a long-standing focus on the Gimblett Gravels. The warm, stony soils here give natural depth to Syrah, Bordeaux blends and Chardonnay, all handled with a mix of precision and approachability.
The estate helped put modern Hawke’s Bay on the map, balancing serious intent with an easy, food-friendly style. Trinity Hill’s wines are known for their clarity, gentle structure and reliable sense of place.
New Zealand
New Zealand’s wine history is young, beginning with nineteenth century missionaries and modest early plantings. A turning point came in the 1970s with modern Sauvignon Blanc and cool climate viticulture. Rapid growth followed, and the country now stands as a leader in fresh, focused, regionally expressive wines.
New Zealand has built a global reputation on purity, bright fruit and a strong connection to place. Its wine regions stretch from subtropical Northland to the cool reaches of Central Otago, with a focus on expressing climate and landscape. The appellation framework is relatively relaxed, allowing producers to focus on style and sustainability. Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough remains the country’s calling card, while Pinot Noir thrives in Martinborough and Central Otago.
You will also find excellent Chardonnay, Riesling and Syrah across both islands. New Zealand wine is defined by freshness, clarity and a modern approach that celebrates its unique environment.
Hawke`s Bay
Hawke’s Bay sits on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island and is known for its warm climate and broad mix of reliable styles. Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and Cabernet Franc do well, with structure and clear definition while Syrah shows a fresher peppery character. Chardonnay is a major strength offering both crisp and fuller more textured styles.
One of the region’s key areas is the Gimblett Gravels where free draining stony soils help produce some of New Zealand’s most focused and age worthy reds often made from Syrah; indeed this has become a world-renowned style.
Hawke’s Bay delivers wines with balance clarity and plenty of regional identity.
