One difficult vintage. One Dagueneau.

One difficult vintage. One Dagueneau.

A difficult year can tell you a lot about a wine producer. When the crop is small and the fruit needs careful selection, the interesting question is what they choose to bottle. At Domaine Didier Dagueneau, 2021 produced an unusually clear answer: one Sauvignon Blanc, called XXI.

If you collect Loire whites, you may already know names such as Silex and Pur Sang. These are among the wines that built Dagueneau’s reputation, offering different expressions of Sauvignon Blanc from the domaine’s vineyards around Pouilly-Fumé. They also give returning drinkers something to follow from one harvest to the next.

In 2021, that familiar line-up changed. A severely reduced crop and difficult conditions towards harvest prompted Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau to bring together wines that would normally have been bottled separately. XXI, the Roman numeral for 21, became the release for that vintage.

That decision is the reason to take a closer look. A producer with recognisable, sought-after cuvées chose to change the range in response to the year. For anyone used to buying the same label each vintage, XXI offers a different way into the estate: through the choices made when the usual plan became difficult to follow.

There is a useful lesson here for anyone buying wine by the vintage chart. A difficult growing season tells you about the conditions a producer faced. To understand the finished bottle, you also need to know what happened in the vineyard and cellar. XXI gives us something specific to explore beyond a general verdict on 2021.

In the glass, XXI brings green apple and gooseberry, floral notes and a smooth texture, with acidity that keeps it lively. That combination of texture and freshness is central to its appeal. Give it time in the glass and pay attention to how the balance shifts as the wine warms.

I’d give it a proper wine glass and serve it cool, allowing it to warm a little as you taste. Try a sip on its own, then another alongside simply cooked fish with lemon and butter. The food gives you a useful second perspective on the balance between texture and acidity.

A bottle with this reputation is a considered purchase. Tasting XXI in a 100ml tube lets you find out how much its style appeals to you, with the story behind it making the experience all the more interesting. If it earns a place on your table, your tube credit can go towards the matching full-size bottle.
