About the producer

Macrobert & Canals is a collaborative project between Scottish-born winemaker Justin Macrobert and his wife, Spanish winemaker Pilar Canals, based in Rioja. Their focus is on site-driven wines from old vineyards in Rioja Oriental, many planted at altitude on limestone and clay soils. Farming is organic, and the winemaking is deliberately restrained, favouring concrete, large oak and minimal extraction to keep freshness front and centre. Garnacha and Tempranillo are treated with equal care, resulting in wines that feel vibrant, balanced and food-friendly. Macrobert & Canals brings a fresh, thoughtful energy to Rioja, blending international perspective with deep local understanding.

Spain’s wine history stretches back to Phoenician traders, Roman viticulture and a long monastic tradition. The modern era accelerated after phylloxera pushed French winemakers south, shaping regions like Rioja. Today Spain balances heritage with innovation, reviving old vineyards and native varieties while refining quality across its diverse landscapes.

Spain is one of the most dynamic wine countries in Europe, home to a huge diversity of regions and styles shaped by its varied climate and long winemaking history. You will find fresh Atlantic influenced whites from Rias Baixas and fuller reds from Ribera del Duero and Rioja, where Tempranillo is the headline grape. The appellation system is built around quality tiers such as DO and DOCa which help guide you through everything from crisp Verdejo in Rueda to deep Garnacha from Priorat. Across the country the focus is on expressing place, with modern producers leaning into freshness, balance and regional character.

Rioja is Spain’s flagship wine region and a place where clear structure and long-standing tradition shape the styles. Tempranillo is king, delivering approachable reds with bright fruit gentle spice and familiar Rioja smoothness. Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo will often join the blend.

Ageing classifications such as Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva set the tone with increasing time in oak and bottle, adding layers of flavour. White Rioja, made mainly from Viura (Macabeo) offers both crisp citrus-led styles and fuller oak-influenced, often age-worthy wines.

It is a region built on consistency, reliability and strong winemaking identity.

Red Current

A fresh, modern Rioja built around Garnacha, Tempranillo and Graciano. Expect red cherry, plum, soft spice and a gentle earthy note, all carried by a vibrant line of acidity. The fruit feels bright and clean, with polished tannins giving just enough shape without weighing the wine down.

Rioja Flow

From Rioja in Spain, this red sits at 13.5% ABV, giving it warmth, balance and easy table presence. The structure is smooth and gently framed rather than heavy, with freshness doing the lifting. It is Rioja in a more contemporary mood: expressive, restrained and effortlessly drinkable.

Tapas Mood

Perfect with chorizo, manchego, roast chicken, grilled lamb, mushroom dishes or tomato-rich pasta. This is the glass for relaxed dinners, midweek tapas and easy evenings where you want something with charm, freshness and enough savoury detail to keep things interesting.

Bright Pour

The 100ml format gives you one perfectly measured glass without opening a full bottle. Filled using Coravin Vinitas® technology, each tube is designed to preserve freshness, texture and detail. A smart way to explore new-wave Rioja with zero waste and plenty of pleasure.
