Taste, texture & character

What’s in the glass?

Ripe cherry and raspberry sit at the centre of this Pinot, with vanilla, cinnamon and a subtle almond-like note adding warmth around the edges. The emphasis is on fragrant fruit and a savoury-spiced finish rather than sheer weight. A characterful German red that makes a particularly interesting comparison with Pinot Noir from Burgundy or the cooler corners of the Southern Hemisphere.

The people behind the pour

Corvers-Kauter

The Corvers and Kauter families bring centuries of Rheingau winegrowing history together. Based in Oestrich-Winkel, the estate is led by Matthias and Brigitte Corvers with their son Philipp. Organic vineyard work underpins a range best known for Riesling, but Pinot Noir is an important part of the story too. Their Assmannshäuser bottling explores one of the Rheingau's best-known red-wine addresses. It is a reminder that the estate's interest in vineyard character reaches beyond white wine, with small-batch winemaking and traditional oak part of its approach.

A sense of place

Rheingau, Germany

Explore wines from Germany
Rheingau

The Rheingau is closely associated with Riesling, but Assmannshausen has a longstanding reputation for Pinot Noir, known in Germany as Spätburgunder. Vineyards follow the Rhine through a landscape of slopes and changing soils, giving growers a range of distinct sites. This wine puts the region's red-wine identity in the spotlight: fragrant fruit, spice and a sense of place that makes it a rewarding addition to a Pinot tasting.

Germany

Germany has a strong Pinot Noir tradition under the name Spätburgunder. Its reds deserve a place alongside the country's famous whites: they offer a wide range of textures and aromas, with regional character making comparison especially rewarding.
