Taste, texture & character

What’s in the glass?

Red cherry and raspberry lead, with darker bramble fruit, woody herbs and a gentle toastiness adding depth. The palate has a supple, medium-bodied feel, while fine, chalky tannins give the fruit definition. Fresh acidity keeps it lively through a long finish of spice and a little mocha. There is concentration here, but it comes with detail and restraint rather than weight.

The people behind the pour

Felton Road

Felton Road began in 1991 in Bannockburn, Central Otago, where Stewart Elms recognised the potential of its north-facing slopes. Today, Nigel Greening and winemaker Blair Walter work with fruit grown entirely on the estate's own vineyards. Organic farming and Demeter-certified biodynamics are central to the approach, with careful attention to the health of the land. Pinot Noir is the focus, alongside Chardonnay and Riesling. The different vineyard bottlings let you explore those sites individually, making Calvert a revealing place to start with this much-loved New Zealand producer.

A sense of place

Central Otago, New Zealand

Explore wines from New Zealand
Central Otago

Bannockburn sits on the south bank of the Kawarau River in Central Otago, among the region's warmest and driest vineyard areas. Mountainous terrain creates distinct growing conditions from one subregion to the next, helping explain the variety of Pinot Noir styles found here. At Calvert, clay-like silt soils proved particularly useful during the unusually hot, dry early months of the 2018 season. Cooler conditions towards harvest helped bring that energetic vintage into balance.

New Zealand

New Zealand's Pinot Noir story stretches across cooler regions including Wairarapa, Marlborough, Nelson, North Canterbury and Central Otago. Different climates and soils give each a distinct voice. Beyond the country's familiar Sauvignon Blanc, these reds offer a rewarding route into its diversity, combining expressive fruit with structure and elegance.
