Taste, texture & character

What’s in the glass?

Red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry are lifted by delicate floral notes and a subtle stony character. The palate combines clear, concentrated fruit with fresh acidity and fine tannins, while oak sits quietly in the background. There is depth without heaviness and a long, focused finish. A poised Pinot that shows the freshness of its coastal setting.

The people behind the pour

Hamilton Russell Vineyards

Hamilton Russell Vineyards helped establish the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley's reputation for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Tim Hamilton Russell bought the property in 1975, and the first vintage followed in 1981. His son Anthony later narrowed the focus to those two varieties and to estate-grown fruit. Today, a carefully defined area of stony, clay-rich soils forms the heart of production. With Emul Ross making the wines, the ambition remains specific: one Pinot Noir and one Chardonnay that speak clearly of this single estate, close to the sea near Hermanus.

A sense of place

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, South Africa

Explore wines from South Africa
Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley sits just inland from Hermanus, where the nearby ocean helps create a cool maritime growing environment. It is a natural setting for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Hamilton Russell's vineyards bring stony, iron- and clay-rich soils into that picture, giving the estate its own expression within the valley. The resulting wines often combine ripe fruit with firm definition, showing why this part of South Africa has earned such a following.

South Africa

South Africa's wine regions offer much more than a single style. Around the Cape, proximity to the ocean can change the feel of a wine dramatically. Hemel-en-Aarde's Pinot Noir is an inviting way to explore that cool coastal influence.
